Choosing the right soccer club can feel overwhelming in today’s landscape. There are more youth leagues, platforms and college promises than ever before – yet the number of college programs has not grown. In fact, college roster sizes have decreased, while international players and transfer athletes now make up a larger portion of college teams. Against this backdrop, it’s more important than ever for families to look past labels and focus on what actually supports a player’s long-term development.

At Westy SC, we believe some fundamentals have never changed. Academics, ability, and being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the athlete remain the three most important pillars on our journey, no matter how much the youth soccer landscape shifts. Our decisions as a club are rooted in those pillars, not in trends or marketing.

Years ago, youth soccer leagues were largely structured around ability levels (P1, P2, P3, and so on). Today, many platforms are now driven by how much families are willing to spend on travel to events where results are often lopsided or few college coaches attend. Westy SC takes a different approach. We are intentional about avoiding “one-size-fits-all” leagues and costly travel that does not meaningfully serve player development or exposure.

We also recognize that more changes are coming, including the transition back to school-year birth dates. Westy SC is proactively preparing for this shift by focusing on stabilizing player development around the school-year transition as early as possible. This allows athletes to grow physically, socially, and emotionally in a more natural and supportive environment.

Westy SC will continue to maintain control over our competitive and tournament planning. Through our Regional Platform League decisions, including the newly formed National One League, we determine which age groups should play in certain environments – and which should not. This means we are not forcing every team into a league or event that makes little sense for their level. Rather than spending significant money traveling to events dictated by others, we prioritize purposeful competition aligned with player ability and development.

When it comes to college exposure from U15 – U19, we’re intentional. Many platforms send high school teams to events that attract few college coaches. Westy SC avoids that. Instead, we target events that fit our teams’ level and are more likely to draw the right coaches. We also stay aligned with current recruiting realities. While freshman and sophomore years used to be prime recruiting windows, the process has shifted – now most recruiting occurs during junior and senior years. With that in mind, Westy SC plans:

  • Two targeted out-of-state events for the freshman class
  • Two to four out-of-state events for the sophomore and junior classes
  • Two focused out-of-state events for the senior class

These plans may evolve year to year, but one thing stays the same: Westy SC remains in control of where we go and where we don’t. By keeping costs lower and decisions intentional, we can invest in more suitable events and ultimately provide better opportunities for our players.

At Westy SC, our goal is simple: support each athlete with a thoughtful, development-first pathway that values academics, ability, and care for the whole person. In a crowded and changing youth soccer environment, that clarity is what truly sets us apart.
